When you marry into royalty, everyone takes notice… And just over a week away from Prince Harry’s marriage to American actress Meghan Markle, the couple has been under intense scrutiny from the arts community. Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in New York just unveiled its wax statue of the couple.
Now, Harry & Meghan are being immortalized on collector’s coins in Canada and the U.K. The Canadian coin features an image of the couple based on a sketch by Ottawa-born Joel Kimmel.
Kimmel has worked on over 25 Canadian commemorative coins in the past, including for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, for World War II veterans and for the Toronto Blue Jays’ 40th season.
Kimmel always shows his work off on Instagram, and the Royal Wedding coin is no exception. It’s one of his most intricate; embedded with Swarovski crystals to replicate the ring Harry designed himself, it features Kimmel’s beautiful sketch of the happy couple. He seems thrilled with the result: “the engravers did an incredible job on this,” he wrote.
The coin will have a face value of CAD $20, but it’s actually worth much more. It’s 99.9% pure silver composition, along with the embedded crystals and the limited 15,000 piece run mean its retail price has been set at CAD $104.95. The coins are for sale at Mint.ca and through coin dealers. They can also be found at Canada Post locations where coins are carried.
