A Montreal dad has raised a Twitter storm and sparked nationwide debate after being forced to use the ladies’ room to change his daughter’s diaper in an Île-Perrot Tim Horton’s. The restaurant chain has now promised to install a changing table in men’s rooms at as many of its locations as possible.
Chris Webb was visiting his local Tim Horton’s and needed to change his son’s diaper. When he found that there wasn’t a changing table in the men’s room, he spoke to the restaurant’s supervisor, who invited him to use the women’s restroom. “The women don’t mind,” she told him.
However, while he was in there, a woman seemed startled to see him, and although he explained himself to her, she was clearly uncomfortable with his presence in the washroom. Mr. Webb raised the point that many dads today assume roles traditionally reserved for women – it’s 2018 after all! Husbands change diapers, too!
So, after his unpleasant experience, he took to Twitter, writing a post that became viral and prompted the company to respond.
“I'm shocked and humiliated to have had to use the women's bathroom to change my child in one of your restaurants today,” he wrote. “It’s 2018 and both bathrooms should have a change table in them. Getting out the house with my 1 year old and going for lunch shouldn't mean that I have to explain myself to women as to why I'm in the women's bathroom.”
In a positive turn of events, Mr. Webb received a call from Tim Horton’s Monday, and he seemed pleased with their response. “All restaurants across Canada are being refurbished and change tables are being installed where possible,” he wrote.
