Legendary Montreal poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen was working on a book before his passing last November. The finished volume, which includes a large selection of his poems, notes and song lyrics, is due for release next year, the Montreal Gazette reports. The book will be called The Flame.
Publisher McLelland and Stewart has set a release date for October 16, 2018.
Robert Kory, Cohen’s manager, released a statement about the book, describing its importance for Cohen and what themes fans can expect to find within:
During the final months of his life, Leonard had a singular focus — completing this book taken largely from his unpublished poems and selections from his notebooks. […]The flame and how our culture threatened its extinction was a central concern. […]Those of us who had the rare privilege of spending time with him during this period recognized that the flame burned bright within him to the very end.
Kory also revealed that Cohen finished the book just days before dying, making it his swan song as a poet and writer. Apparently, we’re very lucky he was able to finish it at all. As was the case with his final album, You Want it Darker, the book is anticipated as a source of closure for fans and admirers.
