Harvey Weinstein’s wife of 10 years, Georgina Chapman, is leaving him, she announced via a statement to PEOPLE. She had been married to the film exec since 2007; they have two children together.
My heart breaks for all the women who have suffered tremendous pain because of these unforgivable actions. I have chosen to leave my husband. Caring for my young children is my first priority and I ask the media for privacy at this time.
The news comes after dozens of women alleged sexual misconduct by Mr. Weinstein. The accusations started when the New York Times ran a report last Thursday, in which eight women spoke out against him. The following week, more women stepped forward to accuse Weinstein of unwanted sexual advances and harassment. The list now includes Ashley Judd, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and many others.
Sunday, just days after reports began to emerge, the Weinstein Company announced that Mr. Weinstein’s employment was terminated, effective immediately.
The news that Ms. Chapman is leaving Mr. Weinstein comes as a surprise to many, given the close interconnectedness of the pair’s business relations. At first, Weinstein denied the accusations and claimed his wife was continuing to support him. He has now changes his tune.
We discussed the possibility of a separation and I encouraged her to do what was in her heart. I understand, I love her and I love our children and hopefully, when I am better, I will be in their lives again.
Despite some people being surprised, many more are praising Ms. Chapman for her courage in leaving Mr. Weinstein. They say the fashion designer is doing what’s best for her children and herself, and setting a powerful example for other women not to feel dependent on the men in their lives.
