Mikayla Holmgren was over the moon on Sunday night, after being the first person with Down syndrome not only to compete in a Miss USA State pageant, but also to win two awards in one. Holmgren, 22, overcame her condition and the stigma attached to it and took home the Spirit of Miss USA Award and the Director’s Award.
Mikayla, 22, had competed in Junior and Special Needs pageant before being invited to apply for a State-level pageant (part of the National-level Miss USA competition).
[I] was excited when I got the acceptance letter. I want to be able to show others what inclusion is all about, that someone with special needs can go after their dreams.
She went on to become the first person with Down syndrome to compete at this level.
