Emily Blunt and John Krasinski have been married since 2010. By some Hollywood standards, that’s an eternity! But the Devil Wears Prada star had to impose some extreme rules on one surprising aspect early on in their relationship… Compliments!
Krasinski, 38, recently told Playboy magazine about his early insecurities in his relationship with Blunt, 35. Because they were both famous (especially her), he said, he placed an increased awareness on that fact “in a way that could have been extremely unhealthy if it wasn't for how insanely down-to-earth she was.” In their day-to-day life, that translated to a disproportionate focus on her career and work.
Imagine: if you couldn’t stop talking to your partner about career and work, how long would YOUR marriage last?
Lucky for them, Emily put a stop to this tendency almost immediately. When he wanted to give her a compliment, her reaction was to immediately shut down the topic. Krasinski recalled one poignant example:
I remember being at my house and saying to her, 'So I just want to have this really honest conversation. I think you're one of the best act—' I didn't even get out 'actress.' She went, 'No, no, no, no!' very loud. We didn't have that conversation again for a really long time, and it saved our relationship.
Maybe avoiding excessive compliments is the key to saving the notoriously fickle high-profile Hollywood marriages! Perhaps it’s also a good idea to refrain from excessive discussion of work and professional life…
