Season 2 of '13 Reasons Why': What to Expect?

Selena Gomez’s controversial series has been renewed for a second season.

Netflix original series “13 Reasons Why” struck up many controversial issues. Many people weighed in after we published our first article on the series, “We Need to Talk About 13 Reasons Why”. Some of you feel that it helped sensitize today’s youth to the topics of cyber-bullying and suicide. Others feel that the depictions of suicide in the show went too far and that there are better ways to break the ice on this highly sensitive topic.

Shortly after the initial controversy surrounding the show, executive producer Selena Gomez took to Instagram with a teaser stating “Their story isn't over. Season 2 of #13ReasonsWhy is coming.”:

Their story isn't over. Season 2 of #13ReasonsWhy is coming.

What should we be expecting from season 2 of the show? Read on to continue. SPOILER ALERT! THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR SEASON 1.

After the season 1 finale, everyone was Tweeting about what will happen next. Will all our questions be answered? What will season 2 have in store for us? Here are a few possibilities:

What will happen to Alex?
At the end of season 1, we hear that Alex attempted suicide by shooting himself in the head. Will he be OK? Alex harbored significant guilt about what he did to Hannah, and couldn’t wrap his head around the fact that he played a huge part in her suicide. Rumour has it that Alex might be central to the new season’s narrative.

Will there be a school shooting?
Tyler stashed a secret arsenal of guns in his room at the end of season 1, after looking at pictures of all the people who have wronged him. Viewers were intrigued when he pulled down Alex’s photo, either because he didn’t deserve to be on that list, or he felt Alex’s own guilt and attempted suicide was enough.

Will the teachers remain oblivious to everything?
After Hannah went to Mr. Potter’s office to tell him she had been raped and needed help, he clearly brushed her off. Is that how a teacher should treat and handle a depressed teenager’s situation? We are hoping that in season 2 the teachers become more involved in their students’ lives, trying to help them with their problems, especially if they are thinking suicidal thoughts.

Will Bryce be brought to justice?
After raping both Jessica and Hannah in season 1, we all wonder: will Bryce be brought to justice? We sure hope so. Rumours say that the impact this had on Jessica will be addressed, but nothing has been confirmed. So we will just have to wait and see.

How will Jessica recover?
Jessica was raped by her boyfriend Justin’s so-called best friend Bryce. Justin never did anything to help. When she finds this out, Jessica finally really opens up to her father at the end of season 1. We can only hope that in season 2, Jessica will get the help and support she needs to keep going on with her life. Will she get back with Justin? At the end of the season Jessica has true hate for Justin, but he truly is heartbroken and hurt by what happened and wanted to help in any way he could.

Director Brian Yorkey confirms a few details about season 2

  • Hannah will definitely be part of season 2.
  • There will still be multiple timelines (just like the voice over with Hannah).
  • There will still be timeframes from reality to fiction.
  • The cassette tapes are done, but there might be a new technology brought in.
