The 2019 Academy Awards are fast approaching, and nominees for the ceremony were revealed this morning! The 91st Academy Awards will be held in Hollywood on Sunday, April 24, and broadcast on ABC in the U.S. and on CTV in Canada.
After last year's Oscar nominees were announced, the Internet was outraged at the prevalence of white stars. This year, the Academy has selected a diverse group of nominees. There is also more openness to streaming than ever, with the inclusion of the first-ever Oscar-nominated Netflix film!
This year's nominees include several newsworthy developments:
- Despite opposition from the Academy, a Netflix film is being nominated! Roma did so well, in fact, that it tied The Favourite for most nominations with 10 each. Previously, the Academy didn't want to include Netflix films because they're not released in theatres first...
- Black Panther became the first-ever superhero film to be nominated for "Best Picture".
- There is still no host! Will there be one? We're betting the Academy can find someone, but we can't be sure...
- It's a close contest between Glenn Close (The Wife) and Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) for the "Best Lead Actress" honours - other nominees include Yalitza Apariciao (Roma), Olivia Colman (The Favourite) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You ever Forgive Me).
