The actor son of late The Sopranos star James Gandolfini is to play the younger version of his father's classic mob character.

Michael Gandolfini will portray the future crime family boss in The Many Saints of Newark, the film prequel to his father's TV series, which Alan Taylor is directing.

James Gandolfini won multiple awards for his portrayal of Tony Soprano.

He died in 2013 while holidaying with his son in Italy.

Michael won the role after an extensive search to find the actor who would play the character.

"It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano," Gandolfini said in a statement. "I’m thrilled that I’m going to have the opportunity to work with (The Sopranos creator) David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark."

The young actor joins Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, Billy Magnussen, and Corey Stoll in the ensemble drama, set in 1967, during the race riots of Newark, New Jersey.

The Many Saints of Newark will chronicle the tensions between members of the city's Italian and African-American crime families.

Nivola has been billed to lead the cast as Dickie Moltisanti, who was a mentor to The Sopranos patriarch Tony Soprano and father to Christopher Moltisanti, who was portrayed on TV by Michael Imperioli.

Chase, who wrote the screenplay for the film, is also serving as a producer. Taylor is also on familiar ground - he directed nine episodes of The Sopranos and picked up the 2007 Emmy for the episode Kennedy and Heidi.
