March break is fast approaching, and it’s one of the most popular times of years for Canadians to travel, especially going down South for some much-needed vitamin D! However, public health authorities are warning of an elevated risk of measles outbreak… So whenever you’re travelling, and especially this year, it’s important to make sure all your VACCINES are up-to-date before you leave!

Health Canada has been leading a social media campaign to prevent potential damage from this public health threat. Measles is highly contagious, up to FOUR DAYS before and after symptoms appears. It’s also quite dangerous; complications can include infection, blindness, brain swelling and pregnancy issues.

It’s very important to prevent measles outbreaks through contagion. People who are vaccinated are immune to measles, but up to 90% of people who aren’t vaccinated will become infected if exposed. That’s why it’s so important to get your vaccine, especially if you’re traveling to places like Africa, Europe or South America, where the virus is more prevalent.

Visit Health Canada’s website for detailed information on at-risk destinations, symptoms, prevention and treatment for the measles virus.

Most people recover from the measles virus in 2-3 weeks.
