Plastic pollution is becoming a huge problem for our environment… Now, Metro is finally taking a step many have been waiting for: you’ll soon be able to bring your own reusable container instead of relying on disposable plastic wrapping provided by the store.

Some stores have already begun testing the new policy to accept reusable containers, and the practice will be extended to all Metro stores in Quebec by April 22 – Earth Day – La Presse reports.

HOW IT WORKS

Customers will be allowed to bring reusable containers to the butcher’s counter, the ready-made counter, the seafood counter and the bakery. Employees will fill up the containers and label them with a special sticker for scanning at the cash register.

Customers will be allowed to shop with reusable plastic containers (Tupperware-style) and re-sealable plastic bags (Ziploc-style).

RESTRICTIONS

Some types of containers will be turned away due to safety and hygiene concerns.

  • Glass containers won’t be accepted because they may break and contaminate food;
  • Branded containers (such as margarine containers) will be rejected because they display a barcode that could cause confusion at the register;
  • Dirty, stained, damaged and/or cracked containers may also be turned away.

Ahead of Earth Day, this is an amazing initiative to reduce plastic pollution in our everyday lives! Will you be shopping with reusable bags and reusable containers in the future? As always, let us know what you think in the comments on Facebook!
