Due to rain and melting snow, Quebec’s rivers are expected to reach their highest point of the season at the end of this week. Volunteers are needed before then and during the flooding to help build sandbag walls and perform other flood-related tasks.
It’s the second major flood in Quebec in as many years – the last one happened at this time of year in 2017. Communities are already asking for volunteers, and one Facebook group offers a simple and efficient way to direct volunteers to areas where they are most needed.
The West Island Flood Volunteers Facebook group is Montreal’s hub for flood response. The group is regularly updated with posts from people both offering and requesting help with sandbags and other flood-related tasks.

A group representative told The Beat 92.5 that over 2500 volunteers are available and being dispatched – and it’s not only the West Island! They also coordinated flood relief efforts in Fabreville, Deux-Montagnes and more back in 2017 during the last major flood.
The group is so effective that the authorities are reportedly telling people to reach out there for help first… So if you need help or if you can offer help, don’t hesitate to join and post.
