After being diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer earlier this year, Alex Trebek has revealed that some of his tumors have shrunk by 50%. He is now “near remission” and doctors say his response to the treatments is among the best they’ve ever seen.

Fans were mortified back in March when Trebek announced his diagnosis, saying he would continue hosting Jeoardy! while undergoing cancer treatments. Pancreatic cancer is one of the toughest to treat because it is often symptom-free in its early stages. The survival rate is around 3-9%.

Trebek still has several more rounds of chemotherapy scheduled, in the hopes that his cancer will go into full remission. Still, he is thrilled with his own progress. “It’s kind of mind-boggling,” he told People Magazine. Despite battling physical weakness and feelings of depression due to chemotherapy, Trebek credits his fans and well-wishers with the success of his treatments so far. “I told the doctors, this has to be more than just the chemo, and they agreed it could very well be an important part of this,” he said.
