Missy Elliott is “Humbly Grateful” to be receiving the MTV video vanguard award this year. Elliott, 48, will become the first female rapper to take home the prestigious award next August 26, when the VMAs will be presented.
Last year’s VMA went to another female artist, Jennifer Lopez, who was 49 at the time.
MTV announced the news Monday in a series of Tweets and on their website. Missy Elliott reacted with a grateful message on social media minutes later.

In honour of this award, Missy Elliott will take the stage for a special performance at the MTV VMAs Monday, August 26.
Missy Elliott’s has yet to follow up her last studio album, 2005’s ‘The Cookbook’. Fans are hopeful, however, after she posted a message on Instagram last April promising her long-awaited album ‘Block Party’ would be out this year.
