“No Children” until Canada takes climate change action.

This election season, we’re sure to hear a lot about climate change… This Canadian student believes our government isn’t doing nearly enough to protect the planet, and has created a pledge “NOT TO HAVE CHILDREN UNTIL I AM SURE MY GOVERNMENT WILL ENSURE A SAFE FUTURE FOR THEM”.

Emma Lim has already managed to collect nearly 400 signatures to her pledge. The 18-year-old student from London, ON wants children “more than almost anything,” but feels she would be a bad mother if she brought a child into an unsafe world. “What kind of a mother would I be if I brought a baby into a world where I couldn’t make sure they were safe?” she asks.

If left unchecked, she continues, the current climate crisis will lead to “a future of economic instability, of food scarcity and extreme weather.” Yet as a mother, she wants her children to experience in winter, ocean swimming in summer and changing leaves in fall. In a world where climate change may disrupt the economy, she fears her children won’t be able to pursue their dreams.

Many Canadians feel the same way… Will our government and other world leaders take sufficient action, and fast enough? Time will tell, but for now, it’s nice to see youth taking these types of initiatives to draw attention to the growing problem of climate change.
