John Legend is set to release a new version of controversial Christmas classic ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ with revised lyrics, he revealed to Vanity Fair. Legend’s new version will appear on his upcoming Christmas album ‘A Legendary Christmas’ and will feature lyrics revised with the help of ‘Insecure’ writer Natasha Rothwell.
Originally written in 1944 by Frank Loesser as a duet, the song was popularized by Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Lady Gaga, Dean Martin and many more popular singers. It has come under fire recently for one particular lyric that can be interpreted as a reference to abuse: “Say, what’s in this drink?”
Legend’s 2019 version of the duet, which he performs with fellow ‘The Voice’ coach Kelly Clarkson, has replaced the problematic lyric with this:
What will my friends think I think they should rejoice, ...if I have one more drink? It’s your body, and your choice.
