The first two seasons of ‘The Crown’ focused on the early years of QEII’s reign, but Season 3 skips ahead a few years, to bring us to a rapidly changing post-war Great Britain, in which the royal family struggles to maintain relevance and influence.
Helena Bonham Carter has also been brought on board by Netflix to portray Princess Margaret. Interestingly, Carter has already played QEII, in 2010’s ‘The King’s Speech’. (Editor’s note: ‘The King’s Speech’ is also a fantastic, must-watch film if you’re fascinated by British royalty.)
Colman and Carter have been brought on board for Seasons 3 and 4 of the series, suggesting that a similar pattern (new actors every two seasons) may continue to take place in the show’s future. Season 3 will also star Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, X-Files veteran Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher, Jason Watkins as PM Harold Wilson, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne and Marion Bailey as the Queen Mother.
Season 3 of ‘The Crown’ will explore such events as Prince Charles’ investiture as Prince of Wales (1969), the Queen’s Silver Jubilee (1977) and Princess Margaret’s mission to Washington. We’ll also get a first glimpse of Camilla Rosemary Shand (played by Emerald Fennell), who would later marry Prince Charles.
