The Australian State of New South Wales, home to Sydney and Newcastle, has implemented the world’s first mobile phone detection cameras on its roads. The new devices, similar to speed cameras here, can detect if a driver is texting or speaking on the phone and issue a ticket by mail.
These high-definition cameras will use artificial intelligence to catch drivers on their mobile phones day and night, in all weather conditions. Images flagged by software as potentially containing cell phone use are then reviewed by a police officer who will decide of the driver deserves a ticket.
Another similarity to the speed cameras we’re all familiar with: mobile phone detection cameras will be deployed on fixed supports as well as on specially-adapted trucks, so drivers won’t necessarily always know when and where they could be spotted using their phones.
Would you welcome cameras like this on our roads? Do you think this will be effective to get drivers off their phones? Let us know in the comments on Facebook.
