Miley Cyrus debuts 'punk shag' hairstyle

Miley Cyrus has debuted an edgy "punk shag" hairstyle while teasing fans with promises of new music.

Back in December, the Wrecking Ball hitmaker revealed what her hairstylist Sally Hershberger called a "modern mullet".

Now, Miley has gone even shorter with her new 'do.

"New Hair. New Year. NEW MUSIC!" she captioned a trio of pictures on Instagram, which showed her wearing stonewash jeans, a lilac T-shirt, and black cowboy boots, complementing her bleach blonde hair.

And Sally, who was forced to defend the 27-year-old's new look last month, told People that Miley wanted a low maintenance style.

"It's a very fashion-forward look yet very no-fuss, both reflective of Miley's personality," the celebrity hair guru explained. "To get the edgy look, I point-cut her hair and then used a razor to slice it into a shag - it was a very organic process."

She styled it by rough drying Miley's hair, then used her 24K Vanity Hair Shaping Balm and 24K Golden Touch Nourishing Dry Oil to finish off the "piecy" look.

In response to the star's new look, many of her friends and followers were quick to leave comments on her Instagram post.

"Do it, girl," talkshow host Chelsea Handler wrote, while her brother Trace Cyrus joked: "Yooo cool mullet kid."

Miley also made a drastic hairstyle change just before the release of her fourth studio album Bangerz in 2013. She stunned fans by cutting off her long brunette locks and debuted a short, platinum-blonde style.
