The most recent assessment of the COVID-19 pandemic in the province. As of today there have been 75 more deaths bringing the total to 2,280 deaths from COVID-19. There are758 new cases of COVID-19 bringing the total to 32,623. 1,772 people are in the hospital, including 218 who are in intensive care.
Last week, the Legault government gradually unveiled a deconfinement plan, which included the reopening of stores, regions and elementary schools. According to this plan, the Greater Montreal was to gradually resume its activities as of May 11th. Today, Premier of Quebec François Legault, said the situation in Montreal is not getting better so the reopening of businesses planned for the greater Montreal next week will be postponed to May 18th. Legault said the high number of hospitalizations related to COVID-19 in the Montreal area is one of the reasons for pushing back the gradual business reopening.
Businesses in the rest of Quebec started reopening today.
There are 11,000 employees who are absent from the health care system. Legault asked for more help in the CHSLDs. In the beginning, we asked people who signed up for "Je contribue!" to be qualified and to accept to work full time to help in CHSLDs. The Legault government asks again. Even people who are not qualified, but who are available to work full time, are asked to register on "Je contribue!"
