Montreal mayor Valérie Plante made a surprising statement this week when announcing police officers will soon be outfitted with body cameras while on duty. In the past, Plante has resisted the idea, citing the cost and problems with the technology but now she seems to have changed her tune going even further in saying that other policing measures, including new street-check policy and additional training, should be in place by fall.
"It's all part of this toolbox that we need to have a better grip on possible systemic discrimination," the mayor said.
Due to the recent events south of the border, police departments in Guelph and Ottawa are also considering the tool. MPs and MLAs in Nunavut are calling for the RCMP officers in the territory to wear them, too. As it stands Calgary is the only Canadian police service with body cams.
