After graduating from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Music Production and Engineering, Charlie Puth's big break came with "See You Again" in 2015, a track he co-wrote, co-produced, and performed for the Furious 7 soundtrack as a tribute to Paul Walker. Ever since, the American singer, songwriter, has been on a roll, landing on the Billboard Hot 100 several times before releasing his second studio album, Voicenotes in 2018.
Voicenotes was a pleasant surprise— an impressive pop album inspired by 80s funk and 90s soul that grabbed the attention of even his biggest critics and proved Charlie Puth wasn’t just an oversentimental crooner, but rather a sophisticated pop marksman with a gift for producing some truly soulful tunes — he produced almost the whole album himself — and he wrote the lyrics.
Now the multi-Grammy nominated pop artist is celebrating summer with his first solo release of 2020 titled, "Girlfriend"—and it may be the best new song this week!
"Girlfriend" is everything Puth's fans have been itching for: a smooth track with infectious, soulful grooves and a killer bassline. And in true Charlie Puth fashion, "Girlfriend" was self-produced.
When asked about the song, Puth said, “I am very bad at communicating, so most of the time, I just express my feelings in my music and ‘Girlfriend’ is an example of that. The song is about being persistent and letting someone know that your feelings for them aren’t going to just go away. But rather, they’re always going to be there, and you can’t sleep another night until you have that person by your side every day. But it’s really intense to say all that out loud, so I just put it in a song to make it a little easier for myself.”
At only 28 years old, Charlie Puth has proven to be one of the industry's most consistent hitmakers and "Girlfriend" marks an exciting new chapter for Puth, who is one of the most sought-after collaborators in pop music today.
In fact, he’s in such high demand that Puth recently landed the opportunity to work with the legendary Elton John. In a recent interview, Puth said working with his music idol was really a dream come true and that the track is finished and will be released soon.
