Since the start of the pandemic, Quebec has handed out 3,600 tickets to people who didn't follow Covid-19 rules designed to help flatten the curb and as cases continue to rise, the Quebec government is now taking it a step further.
Premier François Legault announced Thursday morning that the government is going to crackdown on Quebecers who refuse to follow COVID-19 health rules. Starting Saturday, the Quebec government says they well start fining people who refuse to wear masks where they're supposed to, namely indoor public spaces.
“For six months, we have made efforts to fight against the spread of the virus,” said Legault during a press conference in Quebec City. “It is important to say that there is a vast majority of people who follow public health guidelines. Unfortunately, there is a small majority of irresponsible people who don’t.”
Police have been ordered to be less forgiving, particularly in regions that have been tagged “yellow” — early alert zones, Legault announced.
“There’s a trend we don’t like here and right now, we cannot accept that a few irresponsible individuals put the rest of Quebec at risk,” continued Legault.
Authorities will start handing out fines on Saturday, September 12.
