Domestic chores are a subject of contention in many Quebec couples. It seems indeed that the balance is not yet found in the ray of the domestic tasks ... Here are some ways to get there!
Honey, can you vacuum?
If every couple has their own way of functioning, it seems that women are still the ones who make the most! According to a 2010 study by the Institute for Socio-Economic Research and Information (IRIS) in Quebec, women are 14% more likely to participate in domestic tasks. On a daily basis, they devote 28% more hours than a man. Moreover, according to the 2011 edition of the Statistical Portrait of Families in Quebec, women's domestic activities accounted for at least 60% of their productive time, compared with 40% for men. This gap, one of the smallest among OECD member countries, has fortunately been declining steadily since 1986.
Are you washing or wiping?
When it comes to the division of labor, the first thing to do is to draw up a list of the chores to be accomplished. Then, with your spouse, determine what everyone wants to do. To function properly, the sharing of tasks must be done according to the capacities and sensibilities of each one. The time needed to complete the chore must also be taken into account. However, keep in mind that a rigid and definitive distribution can only increase frustrations. Each party must be able to put water in its wine. In addition, the other should not be expected to do the same things at the same time. It is a question of mutual respect. Keep in mind that comments and criticisms only demotivate the other and are the cause of unnecessary baffles.
All tasks are not equal
You also gain a fair view of the "value" of tasks. Taking out the garbage is not like making supper or washing floors but does not mean shoveling the driveway frequency and scope of work aren’t important variables either. Feeling that the other acknowledges what is done certainly reduces tensions.
Shared tasks = complicit couple
Sharing of tasks where each one finds his account is a pledge of happiness for the couple. This of course solidifies the relationship, but also reduces stress. Knowing that one can count on the other is an excellent calming. In addition, according to an American study, couples whose job sharing is fair, have amore of an active and enriching sex life. If this does not motivate both parties to get their hands together, then who will?
