Have you ever found yourself crying at the office?

Whether the cause derives from stress, conflict, or feeling invalidated… Crying at work is a very stressful thing an employee can go through. Especially when you want to hide it.

While expressing your emotions and being honest with yourself is highly important, there are some methods you can use to help calm yourself down when in a professional situation.

According to Forbes Magazine, the best ways to prevent yourself from crying at work include:

Listen to your body: If you feel yourself getting upset, focus on your breathing to help calm yourself down.

Displace your angst: Keeping a stress ball or something similar at your desk can help transfer your anxiety elsewhere.

Cool down: Keep an ice-cold glass of water nearby to help cool your body temperature.

Look up: Slightly tilting your head upwards can help move your focus away from what is making you feel stressed.

Separate yourself from the situation: If possible, step outside for a few minutes. The change of environment will do you wonders.

Redirect your focus: Before overwhelming yourself with thoughts, try starting up a conversation with a colleague about something completely different and positive. This may help to distract you from overthinking.

Play the observer: Detach yourself from the situation and look at it from a different point of view, where you are not part of the situation.
Pinch yourself: Sometimes pinching yourself can be all you need to help you from crying.

Embrace it: If you are unable to hold back your emotions, then let your tears fall. Being honest with yourself and with someone you can trust might just be the best solution for you after all.

At the end of the day, it is so important to express your emotions and to be honest with yourself about your feelings. If complete transparency and vulnerability doesn’t feel safe in the workplace, always make sure to reach out to a loved one or healthcare professional to discuss how you are feeling.
