Visitors from out of town may soon find themselves out of cheap options to find accommodations downtown. Montreal’s Ville-Marie borough has adopted new rules to limit the number of Airbnb short-term rentals, La Presse reports.
The new rules will affect short-term rentals on a 3.3 km stretch of Sainte-Catherine Street, one of the most densely-populated areas in town. New short-term rentals will be forbidden from opening less than 150 metres from one another along that stretch. The city says the move is designed to ease tensions between short-term renters and permanent residents, who often complain that the former can be noisy and disrespectful.
In a statement, Airbnb said it’s open to working with the City of Montreal to find solutions.
