Environmental activist Greta Thunberg will make a stop in Montreal this month to take part in a climate change protest. The 16-year-old Swedish militant rose to fame this year for starting a global student strike movement against climate change.
Thunberg announced on her official Facebook page that she will take part in a climate change protest in Montreal on September 27, and in New York City on September 20.
In Sweden, Greta Thunberg led student protests each Friday, sparking a national movement that quickly became global with the help of social media. Montreal students took part in their own protests last spring.
This summer, Thunberg undertook an ambitious journey to cross the Atlantic on a zero-emissions sailboat to attend the United Nations climate summit on September 23. She arrived in New York City at the end of August – just in time for the start of the school year! Sure enough, she began organizing more strikes immediately upon her arrival. The most recent one was last Friday in New York.
With the school year starting again, it will be very interesting to see where the Friday protest movement goes! There is no doubt the world is facing a serious climate crisis. Maybe our children are the only ones who can really change the tide!
