Five Canadian Cities make the cut

A new study from a British car maintenance service has highlighted the cities around the world with the most expensive parking fees. Of the 65 cities on the list, five of them are Canadian— and according to the survey, Montreal ranks as the most expensive in all of Canada.

The study, put together by Fixter.co.uk, calculated the average price of parking per hour in common places like airports, stadiums and shopping districts, and so on. The cities were selected based on their availability of comparable parking data.

According to the results, New York City tops the list with a 354-per-cent deviation from the average global median. In other words, parking in the Big Apple averages about US$33/hr. for stadium parking, US$30/hr. indoor car parking and US$4.50/hr. for street parking.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that N.Y.C. is ranked number one but what is surprising, is that parking is less expensive in Toronto than Montreal.

According to the study, Montreal ranks at number 21 of the 65 cities with residents expected to pay around CAD$7.63/hr. at shopping centers; CAD$10.10 for over three hours of parking near government buildings, and CAD$20.21 for stadium parking.

Meanwhile, in Toronto (which ranks 25th on the list), parking is only more expensive around stadiums (CAD$25.08/hr.) but cheaper everywhere else.

Other Canadian cities that appear on the list include Calgary at 27, Ottawa at 33, and Vancouver at 36.
