At a press conference late this afternoon, Premier François Legault announced that in red zones, including Montreal, restrictions will once again be tightened. As variants continue to spread in some regions, Legault says the province will shut down gyms, and ask high schools to return to a hybrid teaching model. Meanwhile, places of worship will be limited to a maximum of 25 people and interior sports activities will be further restricted.

The changes will begin to take effect as of Thursday, April 8.

The curfew will continue to run from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.; however, Montreal could go back to 8 p.m. curfew if cases rise, Legault says.

The announcement comes as Quebec enters a third wave of the pandemic and after Canada hit a grim milestone, surpassing one million total cases of the COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

Monday saw 1,252 new COVID-19 cases in Quebec with over 10,000 active cases across the province.
