Kobe Bryant will be saluted during a public memorial at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on 24 February.

The basketball legend, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and seven other people were killed in a helicopter crash in California on 26 January, and a memorial event has now been organised, according to Los Angeles Times sources.

The Staples Center, where Kobe played basketball for the Los Angeles Lakers for 20 years, became a makeshift memorial site for the tragic sportsman and his daughter immediately following the crash in Calabasas, California.

The date of the memorial, 2/24, also corresponds with the No. 24 jersey Bryant wore with the Lakers and the No. 2 worn by Gianna at her Harbor Day School and Mamba Sports Academy. Both jerseys have been retired following the tragedy.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti confirmed a memorial was in the works last week by saying, "We are one city that believes in each other, believes in something bigger than ourselves and we will absolutely do everything to make sure that this is done so that everybody can come to it as well," he told reporters.

Staples Center has previously hosted memorials for Michael Jackson and Nipsey Hussle.
