Oprah started out in media in 1971. After winning the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant, she caught the attention of Tennessee radio WVOL, where she became a part-time news reader. At Nashville-based WLAC-TV, she became the station's youngest AND first black female news anchor. Later, 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' first aired nationally in 1986. The show aired until 2011 and is still the highest-rated daytime talk show in American TV history.
