Oprah started out in media in 1971. After winning the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant, she caught the attention of Tennessee radio WVOL, where she became a part-time news reader. At Nashville-based WLAC-TV, she became the station's youngest AND first black female news anchor. Later, 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' first aired nationally in 1986.
