Mad Men star Elisabeth Moss' dark new drama The Handmaid's Tale has inspired a clothing line.

Bosses at streaming network Hulu, where the Margaret Atwood adaptation is airing, have teamed up with New York-based "anti-fashion" label Vaquera to put a positive spin on a surprising tie-in.

It may seem a little surprising as Moss and co-star Samira Wiley play futuristic sex slaves forced to wear red capes and cover their faces with white bonnets in the drama.

Their characters' oppressive clothes inspired the concept for a collection to promote the discussion of "poignant social issues" through visual language, representatives for Vaquera told Refinery 29. "We aim to reverse cultural norms, celebrate individuality, and empower oppressed individuals."

"Color is very important to the plot of the show because it is used to categorize people based on their physical bodies," the statement from Vaquera bosses notes. "The Handmaids are dressed in red, which is a color historically associated with violence, oppression, and sex...

"We felt so strongly about the use of red in the story that we decided to make a collection of all red looks for this project."

Vaquera bosses teased two items on Instagram on Wednesday (26Apr17) - the back of a red jacket with white embroidery, and a red hoodie with a white hood, which features 'Nolite te bastardes carborundorum' - a quote from Atwood's book on the front. The line translates as "Don't let the b**tards grind you down".

The full collection will be revealed at a performance piece in New York in June (17). Vaquera was formed in 2013 by twentysomethings Patric DiCaprio, Bryn Taubensee, Claire Sully, and David Moses.
