Rihanna and Ariana Grande were the belles of the ball at this year's Met Gala in New York on Monday night (07May18), wowing the fashion police with religious-themed outfits.

Rihanna dressed up as a silver style pope in Maison Margiela, complete with pontifical headpiece, while singer Grande made her Met Gala debut in a stunning Vera Wang outfit featuring scenes from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel paintings.

Katy Perry also made waves as a golden angel complete with huge wings, and Oscar winner Frances McDormand was a big hit too in a pale blue number and matching headpiece.

But Sarah Jessica Parker was the queen of the headpieces again, wearing an over-the-top gold papal tiara which matched her Queen of Hearts gown.

Many stars chose to wear pure white to note the Heavenly Bodies theme of this year's event, with Hailee Steinfeld, Uma Thurman, Dakota Fanning, and Mindy Kaling all arriving in simple, form-fitting gowns, while some of the stars, including Kaling, Lily Collins in Givenchy and Steinfeld topped off their outfits with gold crowns.

Collins opted for black, as did Zoe Kravitz, who looked chic and sexy in a lace Saint Laurent number, and Emma Stone, while Kerry Washington, like Katy Perry, Grande, Sarah Jessica Parker, and model Ashley Graham was a golden girl.

Graham only had eyes for the pope of the red carpet, Rihanna, telling reporters, "I’m never speechless and I’m speechless right now", after spotting the singer and fashion icon.

This year’s Costume Institute Gala benefit celebrates the opening of the Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination exhibition and is hosted by Rihanna, Amal Clooney, fashion designer Donatella Versace, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
