Fined $107 for Not Having Tire Valve Caps…

A Quebec City driver who was caught without caps in his tires’ valves was slapped with a $107 fine by police. Photos of his ticket have been circulating on social media, with other drivers calling the fine ridiculous and totally unnecessary.

To justify the ticket, police officer Michael Cloutier referred to Article 213 of the Highway Safety Code, which states that a vehicle’s owner must keep their equipment in constant working order. According to the officer, not having a tire valve installed counts as an infraction to this rule.

Will we be seeing more strict applications of the Highway Safety Code this summer? Despite having reflectors on his fork and pedals, as well as a flashing light on the back, police insisted that Mr. Adasz was breaking the rules…

For example, bicycles like these could theoretically be fined by Montreal police. Despite having lights attached, they are missing a reflector on each wheel…

Could cops also start giving out fines for drivers and cyclists who have missing valve caps? That remains to be seen.
