As is the case every year, the Canadian Grand Prix is welcoming some of the fastest cars in the world to our city! Yet at the same time, it’ll force MANY other cars to slow down to a crawl. Many streets will be closed for this and other special events, and don’t forget about construction, either!
Here is a full list of all the major street closures to expect in Montreal for the weekend of June 8-10, 2018.
Grand Prix Events
Most Grand Prix events will be held on Crescent Street, De Maisonneuve Boulevard and Peel Street, which will all be closed along the red dotted areas as illustrated below.
Access to Île Notre-Dame, where the race takes place, will be limited to ticket holders. Cyclists will not be allowed to train on the race track as many of them enjoy doing, since the race will be underway. However, access to Station Jean-Drapeau and Île Sainte-Hélène should operate normally.
Francos de Montréal
The Francos de Montréal festival, also known as Francofolies, starts off this weekend with a string of outdoor shows at Place des Festivals. Expect heavy traffic and occasional disruptions in the Quartier Latin area.
MURAL Festival
The flourishing MURAL Festival, one of Montreal’s coolest new happenings, is celebrating its sixth edition this year. A giant sidewalk sale will take up the entire street on Saint-Laurent, which will be closed between Sherbrooke and Mont-Royal from Thursday to Sunday.
The closed area is identified by the red dotted line.
Construction
Transports Québec has once again warned drivers that many road closures will be in effect this weekend. Highway 15-S towards Champlain Bridge will be closed all weekend, as illustrated. The Southbound bridge will only be accessible via Gaétan-Laberge Boulevard, Highway 10 or via Nun’s Island.
Access to 15-S/20-E from Atwater will also be closed.
Worst of all, access to the Northbound Champlain bridge will be closed off from Highway 10-W. The entire highway will be closed off between the 30 and Marie-Victorin Boul. Motorists going into Montreal will have no choice but to get onto the bridge via Marie-Victorin Boul. OR take a different bridge.
HOWEVER, a special itinerary will be created (illustrated in blue below) so that drivers can at least get from the South Shore to the Grand Prix parking. This will take motorists onto Highway 30-W, then up Matte Boulevard, then onto Route 132-E (Marie-Victorin). Finally, motorists will be able to take a Southbound lane of Champlain Bridge going North onto the island.
Additionally, Transports Québec suggests local South Shore traffic use the service road on Highway 10-W to access Longueil and its surroundings, while other motorists going to Montreal will take a detour via the 30-E, Route 112/116-W and Route 134-W to take Jacques-Cartier Bridge into Montreal.
