Alicia Silverstone got schooled in high fashion on the set of Clueless.
The blonde actress made her leading actress debut as clothes-obsessed student Cher Horowitz in Amy Heckerling’s 1995 cult classic, working closely with costume designer Mona May on Cher’s now iconic outfits.
As she was only just starting out, Alicia wasn’t well versed in the world of designer clothes – something Mona was happy to help her out with.
“She was a young ingénue, she had been in one or two music videos and she didn’t have a lot of experience with film,” Mona explained to Tatler. “She was already then, at 18, an activist. She would come in in her sweats with her dogs and she really had to learn about high fashion and designer clothes and how to become that character.
“We’re still close friends, she texts me pictures of things she might wear on red carpets.”
In the movie, Alicia has a total of 60 costume changes, while Stacey Dash, who played Cher’s best friend Dionne, has 50.
Creating a fun and relaxed environment was key for Mona, who says everyone on set enjoyed their time together.
“They loved it, it was so much fun,” she grinned. “I’m a costume designer that allows actors to have their voice. We’re creating this together, they have to feel comfortable. If they don’t feel comfortable, I didn’t do my job.”
