Lizzo has shared an unedited nude selfie on social media to help promote Dove's new campaign.

The Truth Hurts hitmaker has partnered with the team at the skincare company on the Dove Self-Esteem Project to tackle the issue of "digital distortion" in advertising.

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Lizzo posted a photo depicting her posing nude while sitting on a grey sofa and holding a white teacup. The star's hair and arms are carefully positioned to cover her breasts.

"WELCOME TO TAURUS SEASON. To celebrate I wanna give y'all this unedited selfie...now normally I would fix my belly and smooth my skin but baby I wanted show u how I do it au natural - I am excited to be partnering with @dove and the #DoveSelfEsteemProject which is helping to reverse the negative effects of social media and changing the conversation about beauty standards. Let's get real y'all," she posted.

The image quickly racked up more than 1.3 million likes, with a number of Lizzo's celebrity fans posting positive messages in the comments section.

Moschino designer Jeremy Scott wrote, "More like, 'Welcome to gorgeous season!!!'" while singer SZA added: "It's you having no blemishes at ALL lol .. sigh I jus admire u Fren (sic)."

As part of the Self-Esteem Project, the team at Dove are releasing a new film titled Reverse Selfie, which explores how far retouching apps can distort reality and how young girls are changing their appearance for social media.

In addition, they are launching other tools to help parents have The Selfie Talk, that is, a conversation with young people about how they can have a positive experience online.

"I love how this generation is so creative in the ways in which they express themselves. It's really inspiring to see how people are taking their identity and their beauty into their own hands," the 32-year-old added in a statement. "However, people are struggling with their self-image and self-confidence more than ever. This is amplified by the increasing pressure to show a digitally distorted version of ourselves, reinforcing the idea that our beauty in real life is not good enough or worthy of likes. That's why the Dove Self-Esteem Project and I want you to have The Selfie Talk with a young person in your life. It's happening to young people everywhere, so let's talk about it."
