Selena Gomez's transformation from brunette to blonde took over eight hours to complete.

The Hollywood superstar stunned fans when she posted a photo of her new look to the Instagram page for her Rare Beauty cosmetics brand last week.

Selena didn't share the exact reason why she opted for the bright blonde shade, but her go-to hairstylists, Nikki Lee and Riawna Capri of Nine Zero One salon, have since detailed the process they went through to achieve the colour.

"There's LEVELS to this blonde," Nikki wrote in an Instagram post. "The entire process took 200 foils, several bowls of bleach, and eight hours of hair magic! Definitely worth it! Her hair looks and feels amazing!"

The hair guru went on to explain that she and Riawna started by prepping Selena's hair with In Common's Crystal Serum to protect her strands. They then "highlighted every hair on her head" with Joico's Blonde Life Lightening Powder and 30 volume developer.

"This processed for quite some time. After she lifted to a pale yellow we took the lightener off. We tapped down her root with LumiShine Demi-Permanent Liquid 5NA with 5 Volume, then an all over pre-tone with LumiShine Demi-Permanent Liquid 8NW + 10NW equal parts with 5 Volume, and a second toner with LumiShine Demi-Permanent Liquid 10V with 5 Volume," the hair pro added. "We finished the process with a full Crystal Cashmere treatment by In Common to lock everything in and bring it back to life."

And to maintain such a bright blonde, Nikki recommended that Selena use Joico's Color Balance Purple Shampoo every third time she washes her locks.

It's not the first time the star has tried out blonde hair - she previously unveiled a platinum colour with dark roots when she stepped out at the American Music Awards in 2017.
