On this day in 1962 (June 28), the Champlain Bridge was inaugurated. At 10pm tonight, the busiest bridge in Canada will be closed for good, 57 years to the day after being opened. Originally named the Nuns’ Island Bridge, the Champlain was built to alleviate traffic congestion on the overcrowded Victoria and Jacques-Cartier bridges. At the time of its completion, it was the largest application of prestressed concrete ever seen in Canada.

The bridge reached the end of its life earlier than expected, namely because of drainage problems which, combined with corrosion from road salts, forced workers to reinforce the bridge so that it could remain open for the last few years.

The new Champlain bridge, dubbed "Samuel-de-Champlain", is slated to open at 11am Monday, July 1st, 2019.
