The city of Montreal has released public data detailing restaurants and other food vendors who have been prosecuted and fined for health violations. The data goes all the way back to January of 2015, and lists no fewer than 2,304 individual fines given to 960 businesses for having unclean premises and other health violations.
From rodent droppings to poorly cleaned counters, unrefrigerated goods, employees not wearing hairnets… The disgusting list goes on, and on, and on…
There are also many fines listed for establishment that failed to properly label good intended for public sale. The law states that goods intended for public sale must be properly labelled, including information such as an ingredient list, net weight, where the food comes from and more.
CBC News has further compiled the city’s data, providing a list of the restaurants and vendors with the highest number of violations on their record, as well as the total value of the fines per establishment. The numbers are scary – Montreal’s worst offenders have 17 and 12 violations each, and they’re both still open! In fact, of the 20 businesses on this “worst offenders” list, only one has closed down!
