It’s the first weekend of the year 2019! For many people, the first weekend of the year is usually spent resting or doing chores… But if you’re done your chores, or if you just want to get out there and do something, there are tons of interesting activities to get up to!
FREE MUSEUM DAY (Sunday)
This winter, many museums across Quebec will be 100% FREE to visit on the first Sunday of each month. This month’s “free museum day” falls this Sunday, January 6. Museums across the province are participating in this initiative, but in Montreal, the list includes some of our favourites:
- Montreal Museum of Fine Arts
- Canadian Centre for Architecture
- McCord Museum
- Stewart Museum
- Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC)
- Exporail (Saint-Constant)
- Écomusée du fier monde
- Montreal Holocaust Museum
- Musée des maîtres et artisans du Québec
Visit Culture et Communications Québec’s website for the full details.
FIREWORKS (Saturday evening)
This weekend is your last chance to see Fire On Ice, the fireworks display hosted at the Old Port’s skating rink, opposite from Bonsecours Market. Best of all, seeing Fire On Ice is completely FREE, and for a small fee (46.95 adult / $4.60 ages 6-12 / $0 under 6 / $18 families), you can even admire the spectacle while skating! Click here for details.
LUMINOTHERAPIE (all weekend)
Luminotherapie, a free light show hosted yearly at Place des Festivals, is back again until January 27! This year’s show is called “Effet domino”, by Ingrid Ingrid. Spectators are invited to topple sets of interactive, multi-coloured dominoes. There are 120 in all, spread out across Place des Festivals. Each domino makes a sound as you topple or twist it, contributing to a wonderful tapestry of light and sound, all topped off by a massive projection onto UQÀM’s neighbouring Pavillon Président-Kennedy.
