As peculiar as it may seem, the Canadian Prime Minister’s mother Margaret Trudeau is a comedian… And she’s actually slated to perform at this year’s Just For Laughs Festival!
Her show, called “Certain Woman of an Age”, is being presented three nights, July 25 to 27, at Montreal’s Gesù.
Vancouver-born Margaret Trudeau is an outspoken mental health advocate. Her personal life has been filled with challenges – from becoming Canada’s “First Lady” to losing her husband and son, she also battles bipolar disorder.
Many are doubtless wondering what exactly she’ll be talking about. Her relationship and marriage with former Prime Minister Pierre-Elliott Trudeau was the subject of intense media scrutiny. Trudeau was a bachelor before he took office, and married Margaret (née Sinclair) in secret. The public was shocked!
Not long afterwards, Margaret made headline after headline as her marriage to the Prime Minister fell apart. She smuggled drugs in his luggage; partied with Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Ronnie Wood; and ultimately separated from her husband in 1977. After Trudeau lost the 1979 federal elections, a photo of Margaret partying at Studio 54 nightclub in New York was widely circulated in the media.
Will she discuss all of this in her show? Or will she prefer to stick to the topics of mental health advocacy she has been centered on lately? Time will tell!
