In a significant revision to its dress code, Calypso Waterpark, just East of Ottawa, now allows women to bathe and use its water slides without wearing a bathing suit top, just like men. The change comes in reaction to a human rights complaint. Calypso Waterpark is owned and operated by Calypso-Valcartier Group.
Calypso’s new dress code does away with the distinction between men and women, simply stating that bathing suit bottoms are mandatory for all clients. “We reserve the right to determine the appropriateness of swimwear,” the park added.
While the rules have been relaxed to allow toplessness for all, thongs and transparent clothing are still prohibited.
The change comes in reaction to a human rights complaint dating back to 2017. A woman inquired about the right to using the park’s installations while topless, and her request was denied. Since being topless in public is legal for women in Ontario, she filed a complaint with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.
Different in Quebec?
Valcartier Waterpark, in in Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec, is also run by the Calypso-Valcartier Group. The change in rules also applies there, but their safety code still specifies a top must be worn. If you’re a woman planning on visiting Valcartier Waterpark topless, we must recommend bringing a bathing suit top along just in case… Park employees may ask you to wear a top for the slides.
