Do the Right Thing star Danny Aiello has died aged 86.
The actor, perhaps best known for his supporting roles in movies such as Bang the Drum Slowly and The Godfather Part II, died on Thursday night, his family told TMZ.
Aiello was being treated for a sudden illness at a medical facility in New Jersey when he suffered an infection related to the treatment. Editors at the publication reported that his family had come to visit him earlier in the day, and he passed shortly after they'd left that evening.
Following his breakthrough, the screen star capitalised on his success in the '80s, landing roles in movies such as Fort Apache, The Bronx, Once Upon a Time in America, The Purple Rose of Cairo, and Moonstruck.
Most notably, he scored a Best Supporting Oscar nomination for his role as pizza store owner Sal in Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing.
Aiello, who was also a singer and Broadway actor, is survived by three of his four children - his son actor Danny Aiello III died in 2010 of pancreatic cancer - and wife of 64 years, Sandy.
