The pandemic has inspired many of us to get creative over the past few months and in many ways to step back in time. As communities look for safe ways to slowly reopen, a blast from the past is making a huge comeback: the drive-in!

While most cinemas around the world have gone dark in recent months, drive-in entertainment has seen a resurgence during the pandemic as businesses and communities across the globe have begun to host simple outdoor movie screenings while others are going so far as re-inventing the classic in-car experience.

Now long after most drive-in movie theaters had shuttered their screens, plenty of new options are popping up across the province that gives Montrealers additional ways to see movies on a big screen!

The city of Dorval recently announced it will soon join in on the fun by converting the south parking lot at Dorval Gardens, via Carson Ave., into a makeshift drive-in cinema. And it all starts today!

Tonight at 9 p.m. the film Sonic the Hedgehog, will be shown in English. On Saturday at 9 p.m., the film Menteur will be shown in French.

Tickets are available at https://www.ville.dorval.qc.ca/en/events/

The entry costs are $5 per car for Dorval residents and $8 for non-residents.

In addition to this, a brand-new multi-purpose entertainment venue will be opening later this month.

Located at the intersection of the Décarie Expressway and Highway 40, The Royalmount Drive-In Event Theatre is described in as a “fully convertible drive-in venue capable of hosting movie nights, live bands, comedy shows, specialty screenings, graduations, televised or streamed live sporting events, corporate presentations and events, product launches and other public gatherings, which have been on hold since mid-March.”

According to the website, the venue is capable of accommodating as many as 250 cars and will include a 30-foot stage and a 50-foot LED screen. The website also promises single bathrooms; access to power and water; window service to eliminate the need for guests to leave their vehicles; premium audio broadcast to each car, and so much more!

Organizers say the venue will be available to rent for show promoters, private groups, charitable organizations, schools, and other collectives.

Approved by the provincial and municipal governments, The Royalmount Drive-In Event Theatre will open on June 21. For more information, feel free to visit their website
