As of October 1, 2020, the STM will increase the price for most fares.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise since it was reported that Montreal's public transit network will lose about $523 million in 2020 due to the pandemic.

STM spokesperson Isabelle-Alice Tremblay previously said that bus ridership declined dramatically, hitting its all-time low in the week of April 6, when it dropped 82 per cent. By the week of July 13, the drop was still at 46 per cent. For the Metro, the decrease in ridership was at 92 per cent by the week of April 6, and by the week of July 13, ridership was still down by 73 per cent, Tremblay said.

According to a chart released by the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM), some fares will be going up at an average rate of 2%.

Not everything will see a price hike; according to the ARTM, they have decided not to increase the fare for one-way tickets which are currently the most popular since many people continue to work remotely and don’t necessarily need to buy a monthly pass.

For the STM, this means we should expect a 50-cent price increase on three-day passes, 10-trip passes and weekly passes.

Monthly passes will increase two dollars from $86.50/month to $88.50/month. The student monthly rate is also going up to $53/month from $52/month.

Finally, Laval residents will also see a $2 increase in the cost for a monthly STL subscription.

We recommend visiting the ARTM website for a detailed breakdown of the costs of every different type of fare.
