A bit of good news for those who travel downtown by car in the evenings.

Downtown parking in Montreal will be free on weekdays as of 6 p.m., right up until the end of the year.

Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante made the announcement via Twitter on Tuesday as part of the city's economic recovery plan as the pandemic rages on.

The news comes after Plante announced last month that parking across downtown would be free on weekends from November 14 to December 31, 2020. Plante said $6 million is being used to help businesses in the entire territory of Montreal's 19 boroughs and that 18,000 parking spaces will be available.

Plante said the announcement is an improvement on the city's original plan: "We are working hard to support our businesses during this time, and we will continue to listen to needs," Plante wrote on Twitter.
