On Wednesday morning, the nominees for the 78th annual Golden Globes were announced by presenters Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson and as we expected, there are some real big surprises this year.
2020 was a strange year for film since most threatrical releases were delayed, which might explain why David Fincher’s Mank received the most nominated nominations, earning six in total; followed closely by its fellow Netflix denizen The Trial of the Chicago 7, which earned five nominations of its own. Meanwhile, The Crown—another Netflix production—along with Schitt’s Creek led the pack in the TV race, earning six and five nominations, respectively.
For the first time ever, the Globes nominated more than one woman in the best director category. Chloe Zhao (Nomadland), Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) and Regina King (One Night in Miami) all made the cut this year, alongside David Fincher (Mank) and Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7).
Meanwhile, Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm received three nonimnations: best motion picture – musical or comedy, best actor – musical or comedy (for Cohen), and best actress – musical or comedy for Maria Bakalova. Cohen also received another nod for his work in The Trial of the Chicago 7 (best supporting actor).
For the first time, the Golden Globes are going virtual as returning duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler host from opposite sides of the country.
The show will air on Feb. 28.
