Some people might think Galentine's day is just another attempt by card companies to extract even more money from us but unlike Valentine’s Day, whose origins are shrouded in mystery, Galentine’s Day is actually a direct by-product of an American sitcom.

It originated in the 16th episode of the second season of Parks and Recreation entitled, “Galentine's Day”. In the episode, Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) throws her annual Galentine’s Day party for her female friends a day before Valentine’s Day. Ever since, women around the world have come together on February 13 to celebrate their lady friends, whether they’re single or not.

Basically, it’s a day dedicated to showering your closest friends with love and attention, and unlike the more materialistic Valentine's day— going by the example set by Leslie Knope— it is expected to offer more thoughtful gifts and avoid spending money on gifts that are considered cliché. In other words, no one is expecting anything so even the smallest gesture will be welcomed as a lovely surprise.
