Viola Davis stunned at the 2021 Golden Globes with a bold dress that was inspired by African royalty.
The Oscar-winner's stylist Elizabeth Stewart was given the task of sourcing a dress that "spoke to (Viola) specifically as a Black woman" for Sunday's virtual ceremony, and settled on a vibrant gown by Cameroon-born designer Claude Kameni's label Lavie by CK.
"It's all about rethinking glamour and couture on the red carpet in the age of diversity and inclusivity. It's still an arena that needs cultural specificity," Stewart told People, as she revealed the custom gown was "inspired by African royalty".
"Viola is royalty to me," she said of the Hollywood powerhouse.
The dress featured a colourful red, fuchsia and yellow African print in a silk cotton fabric made in Cameroon, and Kameni was overjoyed to be working with Davis again, after the actress wore her designs for a Vanity Fair shoot last year.
"It was such a pleasure making this gown for @violadavis. Finding out she would wear it to the @goldenglobes awards was the icing on the cake. She definitely violated the gown," Kameni wrote in a post on Instagram, alongside pictures of the Fences star wearing her show-stopping creation.
"We wanted to create a dress that showcased viola in a different light but still make it her own sense of style. We nailed it.”
